Serving others through charity has many benefits for the individual. If you dedicate your life and works to charity, you are giving your life a different meaning. Giving to charity can help mental fitness because of the feeling of well-being and sense of purpose it can generate. This feeling of purpose helps to relieve stress and anxiety. When you engage in the service of others you not only give meaning to life, but, you also can extend it.

How to Serve

Serving comes in various ways and there is no one and true method of providing help.   Joining charitable causes is a great way to start serving people. You can either donate money or time to charitable causes. Always remember that doing good for others will definitely allow you to reap good things as well.

Choosing the Battlefield

While it is good to help as much as you can, the truth is you have limited resources.  For this reason you need to pick your battles. Picking your charity will focus your resources in helping other people. A good cause to support is the Red Cross or Red Crescent in your country. These organizations provide relief in any disaster situation. You can donate money or organize a relief effort by volunteering. But, before you think about being a volunteer to any charity, consider your physical and mental health as well. You have to make sure that you are not the type of person who easily becomes vulnerable to anxiety attacks when difficult situations arise. On the other hand, some people are able to develop more confidence  through volunteering.

Telethons

Telethons are great way to raise funds for charity. When disasters strike, such as powerful hurricanes or typhoons, displaced individuals need food, clothing and supplies before they can go back to their ravaged homes. You can volunteer to man the phones or provide pledge data entry. You do not have to earn a degree in communication skills but what you need is your will and eagerness to help other people.

Community Volunteering and Non-Cash Donations

You can help the community by volunteering at  holiday fundraisers for charity. You can donate cakes and pastries profits to charity via a bake sale. There are great community charity groups that you can join. You can also donate old mobile phones where the proceeds can be donated to charity. Anything you can spare, be it time or money it will serve others well. Learn to live with a simple lifestyle and always see to it that anything that is an excess on your part should better be shared to those who have none at all.

Serving with Service Clubs

Service clubs are organized by well-meaning businessmen that want to give back to the community. You can join these clubs or join the sub-clubs if you don’t have the resources. Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions are just some of the service clubs that you can join and provide resources for their various charitable works and missions.

Serving others should not become a chore. Every one of us needs to pitch whatever they can to serve. It is important that you find happiness and joy in serving others. It may not be much but the effort and the sincerity will go a long way especially in keeping your own mental stability and wellness.
